In February, we recognize Black History Month.

In 1926, the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), Dr. Carter G. Woodson established “Negro History Week” during the second week of February. This week was chosen because it encompassed Abraham Lincoln's and Frederick Douglass's birthdays.

In 1976, due to a push from several African American organizations, as well as students at Kent State University, the federal government designated February as Black History Month. Each year there is a specific theme, and in 2023, the theme is “Black Resistance”, encouraging us to reflect on how Black people have resisted and continue to resist historical and ongoing oppression in all forms. Follow this link if you're interested in learning more about ASALH and the history of Black History Month.

At Pawnee, we believe everyone should have proper access to mental health resources and wish to highlight the Black individuals who have been pioneers in the mental healthcare community.
